How To Choose a Career When You Don t Know What To Do

Comments Off
March 15, 2010 at 7:23 am

Author : Anna Johnson

One of the toughest choices you’re bound to confront throughout your career is what job or career choice is right for you?

Accordingly, you may ask yourself what you want to do Which is great if an answer is immediately forthcoming but what if it’s not? Unfortunately, you may not be able to come up with an answer that really helps you if you think of an answer at all This may be because you don’t know what you want to do or because there are just too many things you want to do or because it’s a loaded question: it implies that there must be one answer, which you just can’t decide on

If you find it difficult to answer the question of what you want to do, then I recommend you forget about even trying and instead focus on an alternative question: “what do I want to learn?” In fact, here’s what I suggest you do: grab a piece of paper and make a list of everything career-wise that you want to learn It could be anything – from how to sell, to how to how to manage people After you’re done, look closely at the list Which of these things do you want to learn “now”, which do you want to learn “sometime in the next year”, which do you want to learn “sometime in the next few years” and which are “nice to learn, but not essential” Re-arrange each item into that priority order Your third and last step is to think about what kind of career or job is likely to teach you what you want to learn in that order of priority Or at least what will deliver your “high priority” learnings within the next year

Of course, no job, career or employer will necessarily teach you everything you want to learn And you may change in terms of what you want to learn too So be prepared to update your list

But, for now at list, your list of items indicates which careers and jobs are likely to teach you what you want to know, and thereby provides a great guide for making your next job or career move

Now, the assumption behind this process is that what you want to learn is the best indicator of your next career move and will ultimately help you find the right job(s) or career(s) (remembering that there might be more than one “right” job or career over the course of your professional life) However, I think it’s a fair assumption to make when it’s a matter of making the leap from unsatisfying work to a truly rewarding job or career

Therefore, stop trying to find an answer to the question of what you want to do Go through the fun exercise above and let your answers as to what you want to learn guide you towards the right job(s) and/or career(s) for you

Dealing with Difficult People and Using a 3 Step Negativity Test

Comments Off
March 15, 2010 at 7:23 am

Author : Judy Esmond

Dealing with difficult people means coping with difficult people with certain personalities that you’ll find in the whole pack of Dealing with People Cards One of those in the pack is one of my personal favorites that I call the Negative Norms

SO WHO ARE THESE FRUSTRATING HUMAN BEINGS?

Having discussed Negative Norms before let’s just summarize who they are They are really as they sound, that is totally negative and so is everyone and everything to them In working with difficult people such as this, they will tell you that everything that has been tried has failed miserably

NEGATIVITY TEST AND COPING WITH DIFFICULT PEOPLE

But how can you understand if you are dealing with this type of person? In other publications, we’ve considered using what I have termed the Negativity Test To really know if you are dealing with difficult people that are Negative Norms use the Negativity Test But to make it very effective use this 3 step strategy with the test

STEP ONE AND NOTING THOSE WORDS

Here’s how it works For the next 2 to 4 weeks keep a scorecard of how many positive and negative things are said by this particular person Write down all the words you hear them saying You can either write out the sentences or just the main words

PATTERNS ARE WHAT YOU ARE SEARCHING FOR

However, you have to write down the words to determine if a pattern has happened If you don’t then you might just be reacting to their occasional negative statements You also have to make sure you have regular contact with them to really have enough words in your test database

STEP TWO AND SO WHICH WORDS CAN YOU SEE

At the conclusion of this period of time, up to 4 weeks, sit down and examine closely the words Is there a clear pattern of negative words outweighing the positive comments Or can you see an even balance between pessimistic and optimistic words?

WELL, WHAT CAN YOU SEE WITH THESE WORDS?

If you do find a balance in both types of words, then you do not have a Negative Norm on your hands You are certainly reacting to someone who is not totally negative but is very stressful and anxiety producing

STEP THREE IN NEGATIVITY – LOOKING DEEPER AT THE WORDS

But what if these pessimistic words seriously outweigh the positive comments? Then you need to also look at the strength of these words used by this person Many of us use negative words at times but the true Negative Norms consistently use very emotionally charged pessimistic words

WHAT YOU WOULD SAY AND WHAT THEY WOULD SAY

For instance, you could be thinking negatively about trying to do some sort of activity You could use words like uncertain, unsure or challenge to explain how you feel But these people would have more emotional words such as impossible, failure and disaster to describe their perspective

17 WORDS YOU MIGHT HAVE LISTED

So look more deeply at the negative words that are listed Here is a list of 17 words that are very popular with them The words are: disappointed, hard, concerned, upsetting, unable, distressed, worried, gloomy, undoable, uncooperative, impossible, troubled, offended, unlikely, problematic, improbable and failure And this is only the beginning of their consistently pessimistic language

DEALING WITH DIFFICULT PEOPLE TEST FOR NEGATIVITY

So if you really want to know if you have been dealt the Negative Norm card from the pack, try this test Try this 3 step test and find out if you are really living with or working with difficult people who are Negative Norms If you are, then get ready You’re going to need even more effective strategies and techniques for dealing with difficult people

Which Personality Traits do You Recognize in these 3 Chakra Colors

Comments Off
March 15, 2010 at 1:23 am

Author : Davina Skinner

The Chakra Colors Mirror the Colors of the Rainbow

You have seven main Chakra or energy centers that run the length of the spine Each one of those centers relates to you on various physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels What is particularly interesting is the different personality traits that can be seen and recognized within the Chakras and the colors themselves

As with all of the Chakras and indeed, the Aura as a whole, there are many different meanings and interpretations depending on the shade, tone and the consistency of the color For the sake of simplicity I will highlight here just a few of the most common attributes – good and bad!
Let’s look at just the Lower three Chakras: The Root Chakra, The Sacral Chakra & The Solar plexus

The Base Or Root Chakra Color Red

*The color red signifies physical activity, so you may be particularly interested in keep fit, in sport or even in your overall fitness and physical appearance

*The Red of the Base Chakra can mean you are very passionate about your relationships and the things that interest you It can also mean you speak directly, sometimes loudly and may be prone to angry outbursts – that blow up and then blow over

* A dominant red color can suggest a rather impulsive and dynamic, success motivated nature You thrive in fast paced, active environments You usually enjoy challenge or stimulating events and situations – you like the adrenaline rush of succeeding and winning

* If you have a ‘red’ personality you would probably make a good salesperson or enjoy a position that involved meeting targets You can wear a ‘thick skin’ at times and may be seen as more ‘driven’ than sensitive In fact your co workers may regard you as impatient You can be quite independent in your actions and your thinking

* That is not to say you do not have ‘feelings’, rather if red is a dominant part of your personality that comes into play when at work or in your career , at home with loved ones a different side of the personality may be more apparent hence a different color and chakra area would be involved

* Red personalities can be very passionate lovers and a relationship with you would probably be far from boring!

* Out of balance the typical ‘red’ personality may be quite controlling or prone to regular angry outburst, constantly feeling stressed or agitated In these circumstances you will have little patience with the people around you and feel like you are the only one who can get the job done Severely out of balance then you may suffer symptoms of extreme exhaustion and fatigue

The Sacral or Second Chakra Color Orange

The Sacral Chakra is all about your creativity and your emotions It includes your appetite and how you think and feel about things When you expand this with the attributes of the color orange itself, you will find the following potential personality characteristics

* You may have an adventurous nature and will enjoy thrill seeking activities, it is not enough just to exercise, you want it to be exciting too

* You may show strong tendencies of being very analytical and if out of balance you can be very fixed and rigid in your routines Often we are not so good at spotting our own symptoms of imbalance but can easily see those traits in others

* The orange personality likes to be in their own authority and has the capabilities to do so – they make good organizers, entrepreneurs and may be found in business positions They may be a bit of a ‘rule breaker’ rather than wishing to conform to how society would like them to behave – they will push boundaries when the time suits

* In relationships they will appreciate time on their own or pursuing their individual interests They may enjoy a relationship but they won’t necessarily have a need for one

The Third Chakra, The Solar Plexus and The Yellow Personality

The Solar Plexus encompasses the personality traits of the color yellow This bright sunshine color can denote a radiant personality, one that people are naturally attracted to

* The yellow personality usually has a lovely childlike quality – that is not to say childish They simply have an appealing sense of enjoyment and wonder about them They tend to also have a very good and active sense of humor as well as a naturally bright intellect

* Having a dominant yellow in the Aura can mean you get very excited by projects and ideas but you may have a tendency to take on too many at any one time The result being you may not always get to finish what you started

* These people are often very sensitive, sometimes seeming psychic or having a very good gut instinct People are attracted to them yet they often like to have their own space, they may have many acquaintances but not that many people they would count on as friends themselves

* Yellow personalities can be found in many areas professionally as they can turn their hand to most things They use their own initiative a lot and have what we would term as good common sense

* Out of balance, they may find it hard to set and maintain healthy boundaries They can find themselves drawn to controlling or dominant partners Depending on the shade, the converse could be true, that they have become dominant or controlling themselves

* The sort of exercise that appeals to them has to be fun – so cycling or jogging or a team sport they love As they mature the yellow personality may find themselves drawn to slower exercise like Tai Chi – this appeals to their kinaesthetic and sensitive nature

All of the chakra colors have both positive and negative aspects and attributes just as our personalities do Depending on the situation you find yourself in, you will be calling on a different area of your energy system, a different chakra and a different color

Obviously the ideal situation is to be in balance but most of us do not live lives where that is possible So at any given time the colors we display may be bright, vibrant, dark dull or patchy or any combination of those In such instances we would notice the more negative attributes of the color personality By negative I do not mean it is ‘wrong’ in any way but merely use the word as a way of describing the possible range of emotions and traits that the chakra colors can reveal

Customer ServiceJobs Require More Than A Smile

Comments Off
March 14, 2010 at 7:23 pm

Author : Lawrence J. Reaves

In the world of customer service, there are no strangers, just friends you haven’t met yet And unfortunately, some of those new friends are mean, rude and just weird But no matter the disposition of your customer de jour, your demeanor should always be poised and professional

You”ve probably heard the expression, “The customer is always right ” No one is always right, not even customers, so we’ve slightly amended this phrase to read as follows, “The customer is always right” if you want to keep your job ” And you do want to keep your job, right? In this economy, jobs are precious resources

So if you want to excel in the customer service field, there are a few things to remember A smile goes a long way, but attentive, professional service goes even further Not every customer is going to leave your business happy, but by treating people with the same respect you expect from them, you can at least minimize the damage a miserable customer can do to you and your company

Here are a few customer service tips broken down by the most popular customer service industries:

“Counter” culture and retail jobs

When people think about customer service jobs, they often think about the cash register jockeys breaking change, and the sales floor employees folding sweaters and stocking shelves These retail jobs can be stressful, especially during the holiday shopping season (And if you haven’t already started your seasonal job search, this is a great place to look) One way to ease the stress of these retail gigs is to embrace the diversity they offer Ask your manager if you can move departments, or see if you can cross-train to learn a new skill set For example, if you’re a store greeter charged with making a positive first impression with customers, see if you can be a changing room attendant

Manners are on the menu at restaurant jobs

Restaurant jobs may be the most demanding of customer service jobs You’re always on your feet, hungry people aren’t always the most polite, and the late-night and weekend hours can be demanding But these jobs can be especially rewarding because they’re one of the few gigs where your effort and positive attitude are directly linked to your earning potential That’s right; tips represent the bulk of the pay for servers, bartenders and even bussers So remember: Grabbing that extra serving of blue cheese dressing or bringing the undercooked steak back to the kitchen after a sincere apology can reap you big rewards on the flip side

Dialing in call center jobs

Taking a steady stream of calls from angry and confused customers would be tough to do for 30 minutes But imagine doing it for eight hours at a time Many customer services jobs involve never seeing actual customers, but instead talking over headsets while typing up a storm If you don’t have an onsite ergonomic expert at your telemarketing camp, here are a few basic guidelines to make sure that you won’t get carpal tunnel syndrome your first week on the job Be sure to keep your eyes at least 20 inches from your computer screen, adjust the monitor to your eye level and keep your feet positioned firm on the ground And don’t slouch Working at a desk or cube all day can make you feel cramped and restless

There are, of course, customer service jobs in a number of additional industries we can’t fit here Just remember: When conducting your next job search, make sure to find out how you’ll be interacting with customers – and whether or not that fits your personality

Overview of the Qualifications Needed For Flight Attendant Positions

Comments Off
March 14, 2010 at 7:22 pm

Author : Warren Wong

In order to perform the duties required in flight attendant positions, you do need to pass the rigorous training provided by the airlines The competition for jobs in this sector of the airline industry is fierce because of the lure of being able to travel to distant places Plus, when you work for an airline, you are entitled to discounts on your travel for personal reasons Therefore, airlines know that they have many candidates to choose from and will only choose the best The minimum requirements for these positions is graduation from high school, but most airlines today will only accept applicants who hold a college diploma or university degree

First you have to look at the requirements set down by the airline for hiring flight attendants You also have to realize that these requirements are minimums, meaning that they are the minimum that the airline will accept and that they will naturally choose applicants who have more qualifications than these A diploma or degree is a favorable item to have on your resume because it shows the airline that you have tried to better yourself in receiving higher qualifications than they expect According to surveys of flight attendants, a small number have at least one year of college education, but the majority hold a Bachelor’s degrees and some even have a Master’s degree

Customer service skills are essential for working as a flight attendant You do not need to have experience to apply, but if you do, you will have a better chance of having your resume noticed As an attendant on an aircraft, you will be working with the public every shift This includes coping with frightened passengers, crying babies and passengers who become very rude and disruptive You have to be able to handle all these problems with grace and display a pleasant demeanor without getting upset

Fluency in more than one language is a definite asset You do need to have strong speaking skills in the language of the country in which the airline is based You should also be a fluent English and if you have an additional language, you may be a shoe-in for the position French and Spanish are excellent choices for an additional language Although it is not a requirement of the airline that you be bilingual or trilingual, the fact that you are will give you an edge over the competition

In order to be hired by an airline, you must demonstrate willingness to relocate if necessary There will be times when you are away from home for several days at a time when you have overnight flights and this should not present a problem between your home and work schedule Airlines are also very particular about the appearance of those they hire as flight attendants New candidates must meet an age requirement of being between 18 and 21 years of age and must not be overweight A man must have his hair cut above the collar and a woman with long hair has to have it swept back from her face In addition, the airline will do a background check to make sure you don’t have a criminal record

Your Nursing Assistants Questions Answered

Comments Off
March 14, 2010 at 7:22 pm

Author : Mike Selvon

There is little doubt that the healthcare field is in desperate need of help Hospitals, hospices, nursing homes and rehabilitation clinics need nurses to be able to function in any way Nursing assistants are in the greatest demand

They are responsible for most of the day-to-day care of patients Their job duties are varied depending on skill but there is a real need for qualified nursing assistants all over the world If you are curious about the career of a nursing assistant, this article is for you

What about background checks?

Background checks are at the discretion of the employer Many healthcare facilities have learned how invaluable background checks are to ensure their patient’s safety A background check can turn up if the employee has a criminal record as well as if there were any cases of abuse opened up against him or her

A criminal background check has become standard in the workplace for businesses that deal with patients or the public but often do not cover medical backgrounds unless the individual is registered with the state

What job duties does a nursing assistant have?

Nursing assistants perform the most day-to-day living care They can dispense medication, draw blood, provide sanitary care and even run errands for the patient if it is a home health situation

Nursing assistants are the backbone of the healthcare industry They are the ones who are often the primary care givers when the family cannot do so They also provide emotional care to patients

What kinds of questions do they ask on the nursing assistant examination?

There are two parts to the examination The first is a written exam and the second is demonstrating that you have the required skills necessary to be licensed and caring for a patient Testing varies according to each state’s health board but there are some common items covered

These items include: helping a patient dress, ethics, privacy act and even on which side to stand on if a patient is walking down the hall It is not always about knowing medical terminology Much of a nursing assistant’s day is providing routine care for a patient so it is important that the assistant be able to be able to help dress, bathe and feed a patient

How much do nursing assistants make?

That is a hard question to pin down exactly There are many things that factor into a nursing assistant’s pay The first is whether or not he or she is licensed The second is where the place of employment is

Nursing homes pay generally less than hospitals do because they do not have the budget to pay top dollar to their employees The third factor is what hours and shift the nursing assistant works Assistants that work the “graveyard” shift (from 11:00 p m to 7:00 a m ) generally make at least thirty cents more an hour than day shift employees

I have an elderly relative who needs care during the day; can I hire a nursing assistant rather than a nurse?

Most home health agencies have a few nurses to oversee medical conditions but employ nursing assistants to come in and care for the patients during the day If you do not want to go through an agency and intend to pay for the care out of your own pocket, hiring a nursing assistant is a great way to have quality care and companionship for your relative You will have to do the background check yourself though if you elect not to use an agency

Mike Selvon’s portal will expand your knowledge about nursing assistants. Visit us and leave a comment at our nursing education blog where a free gift awaits you.

How to Ace Virtually Any Interview

Comments Off
March 14, 2010 at 7:22 pm

Author : Casey Yew

Job interviews are scary prospects for even the most qualified candidates How you look on paper and how you present yourself in a one-on-one or group interview setting are often two very different things Fortunately there are ways to solidify your position in any interview regardless of the actual interview purpose The trick is to know yourself well enough to have a ready framework to fill in any setting And of course you should always start and end an interview with a genuine smile and a firm handshake, this alone can seal the deal for some interviewers

Compile Your History

You know where you’ve been and you might have dreams of where you’re going, but to be ready for an interview any time, you need to have these concepts boiled down to pat responses The majority of interview questions pertain to what you’ve done and what you’ve learned from past experiences Since you already know this information, organize it in your mind so that it’s prepackaged and easily deliverable

Organize Your Present

Once you’ve got your background material organized, you can move on to the present What are you doing right now career-wise? What are your interests and hobbies? What do you consider to be your strengths and weaknesses? If you are comfortable with your skills, interests and abilities, you can easily formulate an answer to any of these types of questions – you simply draw from your ready supply of information about yourself

Know Your Future

Finally, consider your future What do you want to be doing with your career in a few more years? Is more education in your future? Do you have a dream of doing something unrelated to your current career? Knowing where you want to be and why, in both a general and specific sense, allows you to toss out a thoughtful answer to a future goals question in an interview Knowing your goals on a broad level allows you to tie them specifically to a particular job or company during your interview – preferably the one you’re interviewing for

Prepare Yourself

Knowing yourself inside and out, you should also know if you are a strong candidate in an interview situation If you are cool and collected in the hot seat, you have the edge on the majority of the population who get flustered and lose their train of thought under pressure Even if you are a superior speaker, practicing ahead of time is a valuable way to learn to position your body and follow through with good interview practices While practicing at home:

- Say your thoughtful responses aloud so they are more ingrained and less spur of the moment when you’re actually on the spot

- Speak slowly and clearly to be sure you are heard well by your imaginary and future interviewers

- Look your interviewer in the eye or between his eyes if eye contact is difficult for you

- Use expressive facial expressions and contained hand gestures to make what you say more interesting and natural (Smiling, relaxed candidates are better than stiff, frowning ones)

- Be a good listener Often your interviewer will tell you about the company or job and you should listen carefully Nod your head, show you’re listening by making acknowledging gestures or sounds, and ask thoughtful questions to show your interest

- Lean forward in your seat and keep your feet on the floor – don’t cross your legs during an interview Ladies can cross their ankles and tuck them under their chair

Finally, you should always thank the interviewer at the end of the interview and with a follow up thank you card a few days later

A great collection of the most common job interview questions and answers, job interview tips and resume writing tips and many more for job seekers and for interviewers are available at http://www.adow.com

Spring forward – The Progress Challenge

Comments Off
March 14, 2010 at 3:39 pm

It seems appropriate, on the day that we “spring forward” on our clocks, to share some things that I enjoyed about another book by Dean Lindsay, The Progress Challenge. (Read my review of his book, Cracking the Networking Code HERE.)

Lindsay notes,

“Change is inevitable, progress is a choice.”

In his trademark, high-energy style, Lindsay explains how to BE progress – to choose progress. He explains the connections between how we think about what we do and doing it, and provides a blueprint for meeting this challenge. He begins the book by asking a question that I believe is relevant for job seekers – What is motivational, and are you it?

Have you thought about it? He suggests that “each of us has the need and the opportunity to be motivated every day of our lives” (p 29). He points out, “Why else would others listen to us, utilize our services, hire us, be led by us?” Right from the start, a key career message. How do you motivate others? What impact do you (or might you) have that will appeal to someone?

Lindsay explains how to think about how to move forward and offers many suggestions to help even the most unmotivated candidate shake off the stress, anxiety and general malaise that may be preventing him or her from springing forward.

One coping mechanism that I like? “#5 Find and Create Humor (p. 138). How many times have you stopped to try to find a single iota of irony or laughter in a situation. If even things are so bad, laughing at it  (or thinking of crazy ways that it could be EVEN WORSE) can sometimes provide a little relief. Can you laugh at yourself? Is there any humor there? If not, maybe creating some would help?

The author reminds his readers: “Progress does not demand perfection, only persistence” (p. 198). How perfectly true! I often remind myself that the “Perfect is the enemy of the good” – if you stay paralyzed, waiting for perfection, it’s unlikely you will ever move ahead with your plans. Similarly, progress does not need to be perfect, it just needs to be moving, which requires consistent and frequent effort on your part.

I enjoyed The Progress Challenge and am sure anyone (job seeker, salesperson, manager, leader, anyone with an eye on the future) will get a lot out of the, yes – motivational book, quotes and action plans.

Want to receive a free copy? Leave a comment about what motivates you, what is keeping you stuck – what you think about any of this! I will choose a winner at random and Dean will send you a copy of his book! (He may even send out several!)
